Region 11 Winter Gathering

AHS Region 11 cordially invites all people interested in growing daylilies to attend our annual Winter Gathering meeting get  together in independence, Missouri at the beautiful Hilton Garden Inn, conveniently located on interstate 70, with easy access to a variety of restaurants, shopping areas, and the National Frontier Trails Museum or the Harry S Truman Presidential Library. Genealogy buffs will want to arrive early to visit the new Midwest Genealogy Center just minutes away from the hotel, part of the Mid Continent Public Library system.  Additional points of interest in the Kansas City area include the Nelson-Atkins Museum, the Kemper Museum, the Arabia Steamboat Museum, and the National World War I Museum, a modern exhibition that meets world-class standards.  In other words, come early or stay late and treat yourself to some of the extra benefits of a Winter Getaway to the KC Metro area!

Our Winter Gathering is filled with programs of broad interest to gardeners.Since most registrants arrive before dinner time on Friday night, we have scheduled a fascinating program after the dinner hour ’Barkeeping For Butterflies‘ by well known area Butterfly gardening expert, Lenora Larsen.  You won’t want to miss Lenora’s entertaining and informational presentation!

Our principal speakers on Saturday are hybridizer Barry Matthie of Bonibrae Daylilies and Hosta, Bloomfield, Ontario ( and Bret Clement from Carmel, Indiana  (  Later on Saturday afternoon we will have a Hybridizer Forum, where anyone interested in hybridizing can join in a discussion with Bret and Barry, as well as our Regional hybridizers.  Our auction Saturday evening will include a wide selection of choice plants from Bret Clement, Barry Matthie, Curt Hanson and many others , including several from Region 11 hybridizers.  this will be a postcard auction, with plants to be shipped in the spring.

Our Sunday morning activities include presentations of new work by Region 11 hybridizers.Rick Pearce,our Regional Publicity Director, will coordinate the slide presentations, and Sherryl Fitzpatrick will moderate.

AHS members who want to train as Garden or Exhibition Judges can take advantage of beginners' classes late Friday afternoon. Note: many people take Exhibition Judge Clinic I just for the wealth of knowledge about daylilies. It's a wonderful learning opportunity, even if there is no intention of becoming an Exhibition Judge. Likewise, Garden Judge training is about developing powers of observation and the ability to take in the merits of the total plant.
